In English we have been looking at the story of Pandora’s Box. We learnt that when she opened the box, a terrible screeching filled the air and hundreds of writhing, horrible creatures flew out and spread across the world. These were things that had never been experienced before - war, disease, hatred, malice and jealousy. The very last thing to come out of the box was hope. So from that moment, although life on earth would never be easy again, no matter what terrible hardships people had to endure, people never gave up hope.
Year 5 thought about how this could be based on today’s society and their lives. After having a group discussion, they created their own box showing fears and hopes. Each child thought carefully about what they enjoy doing and what they hope will happen in the future.

Well done Year 5 for a fantastic first half term. You have all worked so hard and deserve a well-earned break.
You have created brilliant positive quotes to help your friends feel happier and more positive. Remember to continue to be the reason someone smiles each day. What could you do this half term to continue to bring a smile to someone’s day?
You should all be so proud of the myths you have written and your Greek heroes and mythical beasts are amazing.
Enjoy your break.
Superheroes descend upon Year 2!
Date: 22nd Oct 2020 @ 11:35am
Today Superheroes descended upon the Year 2 classrooms! A colourful bunch of smiley superheroes came to take over for the day!
Each superhero introduced their superhero identify and explained their amazing powers.
We had an important mission to create our own Supertato after reading the book 'Supertato' and learning about the evil peas! The children were very creative ensuring their Supertato had a red cape, black mask and belt and googly eyes. Some even had red boots and arms, just like the read Supertato!
Take a look at the Year 2 Superhero Day Gallery for more pictures.

We finally finished off our friendship bracelets today (after numerous attempts with slippery elastic and bead explosions!) to celebrate rainbow day. We discussed how, as a class, we are all friends together and we should be supporting each other and being consistently kind. The children chose their own designs and had a bead with their initials on to make their bracelet unique.

Whilst some children have done their Christmas designs in school, we are aware that some are isolating and have not had the chance.
If they would like to do a design, please print off the blank design sheet below (A4 size) and ask your child to get creative! There is also an ideas sheet and useful things to remember/hints to help.
Once completed please place your child’s design sheet in the green drop box at the external school foyer (open at drop off and pick up only) by Monday 19th October 2020 so we can quarantine the designs and send them all for scanning.
If you can’t print off the sheet, there are blank copies in the drop box. Please email [email protected] if you have any queries and we will do our best to help

Year 2 had a very exciting English lesson yesterday. They followed their set of instructions to create their own superhero cuff. The children had a great time doing this and they couldn't wait to take them home and play with them!
Date: 15th Oct 2020 @ 3:25pm
This week we have been looking at instructions. We have been learning what an imperative verb is (a bossy word) and we used these words in sentences, eg, bake the cake, stir the food, brush your teeth! We then focused on time connectives. On Wednesday we had a really fun English lesson as we followed instructions to make our own Superhero Cuff. Everyone followed the instructions carefully to create their cuff. The Year 2 Superheros wore them with pride. Our last session focused on writing up the instructions on 'How to make a Superhero Cuff'. All of the instructions included time connectives and imperative verbs.
What a super week of learning Year 2!
Please see the Year 2 gallery for more pictures.

Today we looked at a diagram of the Titanic and discussed the different shapes and colours. We then drew the outline of the ship in pencil. Before painting we discussed how we use watercolours. We learnt that by adding water to the dry paint, it creates a watery paint. We focused on using more paint than water to make sure the paint was bright and vibrant. We also concentrated on what thickness of brush we needed, depending on the areas that we were painting. We worked hard to ensure that the paint didn't merge as we wanted the colours to be clear and represent the Titanic.
Take a look at our watercolour paintings!

On 10th October is it 'World Mental Health Day' so today, Friday 9th October, we celebrated 'Rainbow Day'. Our whole school Autumn term PSHE focus is 'After every storm comes a rainbow' therefore we focused on our wellbeing by celebrating 'Rainbow Day'. We spent some time being mindful and spreading positivity.
In Miss Worthington's class we thought about what great qualities we have as a class, we all thought of one word which sums up our whole class. We then made a montage out of these words. We also painted rainbows and did some mindful colouring.
In Miss Langthorp's class we thought about our individual qualities and why we love ourselves. The children then drew a picture of themself and wrote a sentence about their qualities.
We then went outside for playtime and saw a beautiful rainbow over the school. The children were all so excited to have seen a rainbow on 'Rainbow Day'!
Please see the Year 2 gallery for more pictures.

On Friday 9th October, the Year 5 children received a very informative talk from the Police about 'Stranger Danger', 'Road Saftey' and 'Social Media'. PC Barron and PCSO Scott delivered many important messages about: not talking to strangers, safe places to cross when walking home and the importance of being seen on the roads when cycling. They spoke to the chilren about age limits on social apps/games and also discussed with them, the importance of keeping their passwords safe and thinking carefully about photos/ messges they post online. The children asked some really sensible questions and were a credit to Vernon.

Last week, we marked 'World Mental Health Day' by taking time for ourselves. We started off the afternoon with a short medication session and took time to reflect on our day. The children then explored several happiness quotes and came up with their own ideas.
We were all really impressed with how they turned out and can't wait to display them in our classroom as a positive reminder about being happy and kind to ourselves.
Great work Year 5!
'Burst of Happiness' in Year 5!
Date: 12th Oct 2020 @ 4:11pm
On Friday 9th October Year 5 recognised Mental Health Day. To begin the afternoon, Miss Wildig’s class made themselves comfortable and joined in with meditation, picturing their tree house and what would be in their safe space.
They then looked at a range of positive affirmation quotes and wrote their own secret messages to each other. Using white oil pastels, each child created their own quote which was then passed to a different pupil in the class. With water colours, they painted the paper to reveal their message.
Finally everyone wrote a positive word or phrase to describe each person in the class. These words were then placed in a balloon for each child. They took their balloons home and when appropriate, the children popped their balloon for a ‘burst of happiness.’
